Dearmon Residence Project

This project was created based off-of the needs of a classmate and friend, Vanessa Dearmon. She is a hard-working mother and student. Vanessa has a variety of health concerns that require her space to be hypoallergenic. I designed the space to minimize dust collection, utilize sustainable materials and ensure easy maintenance as her children tend to cause spills. I enjoyed creating this residential space for her and learned how every element impacts one another. This project shows that my design work is detail oriented and well rounded. The placement of the furniture, fixtures and equipment was carefully considered, as they impact the client long-term.

Program

Users:  Vanessa, boyfriend Tom, and child Harley
Tasks:
•    The living room needs to be large to have room for activities with Harley
•    The Kitchen must be large for entertaining and hosting family get-togethers
•    The home must be hypoallergenic due to allergy concerns
•    There needs to be a lot of storage options to keep Harley’s toys kept organized
•    The master bedroom cannot have any windows
•    The client would like a wine cooler in the kitchen
•    The materials must be easy to keep clean due to busy lifestyles
•    The materials selected must be sustainable due to the client’s field of study
•    The client prefers a shower versus a tub in the bathroom
•    The client needs a workspace for studying as well as a television in the living room
Furnishings:
•    Cherry wood cabinets
•    Dark countertop
•    Low VOC paint due to sustainable and hypoallergenic concerns
•    Earth-tone colors 
Materials & Furnishings    
•    Client prefers dark, rich colors 
•    Window treatments that prevent dust collection
•    Minimally processed materials
Fixtures
•    Stainless Steel appliances (refrigerator, dishwasher, wine cooler, sink)
•    Energy-star washer and dryer
•    LED Light fixtures
•    Low flow plumbing
